I always wondered if that feeling that i had of "homesickness" while still at home was because of the change in human ecology. Although, I've never seen it change much, I've always lived in a city and am only 16, haven't lived much of my life. Until now did I bother to search for an answer to this feeling.

Thank you for your comment. I really miss Wellsville when it was a real place, and for years after I left I felt deeply homesick. I think we all require a sense of rootedness to be happy in this world, yet people all across America are constantly on the move, either by necessity or because our culture encourages to "move on and move up." It's going to take a real focused effort and deep caring to build real places again.

Unfortunately your right, i live in Wellsville and I am currently attending Welsville High, much of the town (especially main street) appears run down and unattended. Though some renovation has begun (a few Restaurants and stores finding their way into town,) it still seems as though students cannot wait to move on "leaving town and never comming back." I find it to disappointing that some of us can't be proud of where we come from; but i hope in time that Wellsvilles old status can be regained.

What a great web log. I spend hours on the net reading blogs, about tons of various subjects. I have to first of all give praise to whoever created your theme and second of all to you for writing what i can only describe as an fabulous article. Thomas Moore is one of my favorite authors, and I think his quote about the spirit of place is one of the keys to his notion of re-enchanting daily life.
As the Academic Coordinator for the Museum of Art & Archaeology at the University of Missouri, I enjoy working in an enchanted (not haunted) building in an enchanted landscape, historic Francis Quadrangle [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziJp9qXDW5k&feature=player_embedded], itself modeled after The Lawn designed by Mr. Jefferson. I am interested in learning from others in what ways (if any) enchanted places like university campuses can contribute to student learning in this increasingly virtual world we more or less live in these days.

My father was a manager of several new berry stores in Pennsylvania. Chambersburg, Berwick, Sunbury, Freeland, and one in Ironton Ohio. We loved moving to new towns. I often wish I could go back in time to any of my fathers store and take one sample of everything, because all those cheap items are now expensive antiques.

sense of place seems to be a prerequisite to a lot of stewardship.
our challenge here in my area that this wonderful place in a rural area is not presently under development pressure. getting people to not take it for granted is one issue we face. we get them to recognize the special features of our place to try to get them to work for conservation of our heritage and natural heritage.
